JAKARTA: Indonesia’s new antiteror agency chief has been urged to maintain the nation’s zero-terrorist attacks record.
Indonesia's President Joko Widodo recently appointed Eddy Hartono as the head of the National Counterterrorism Agency or BNPT, replacing Rycko Amelza Dahniel, who had completed his term of office.
Hartono reportedly once served as the head of the Indonesian police counterterrorism police force, Densus 88, from 2015 to 2017, and held various previous positions at BNPT.
Hartono received congratulations from the deputy head of the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission on Law, Human Rights and National Security, Ahmad Sahroni, who asked the new BNPT chief to maintain the agency’s achievement.
"As a working partner, I hope Mr. Eddy Hartono can continue to achieve the zero terrorist attack situation that was achieved by the previous leader, Mr. Pol Commissioner Rycko Amelza….terror must also be dealt with completely," Sahroni reportedly told reporters in Jakarta on Thursday (Sept. 12).
"Like yesterday before the arrival of Pope Francis, seven suspected terrorists were arrested. Well, that should be investigated thoroughly to its roots. Is there just terror or is there a serious threat that is secretly moving? Basically, don't let terror cells live in this country. I'm sure Pak (Mr.) Eddy can handle this well."
In addition to the threat of physical terror, Sahroni also highlighted the importance of intensifying deradicalisation programmes.
"And also right now our generation, especially the younger generation, is faced with increasingly sophisticated technological developments,” he was quoted as saying.
“Information can be freely accessed without filtering. BNPT should play a role there, so that none of our young people are left exposed to radical ideas from the virtual world.
“Prevention and deradicalisation programmes should be intensified. So for Pak Eddy, good luck on the job. Remember, never be late and stay alert."
Indonesia’s last terror attack was in December 2022, when a suicide attack by a terrorist from Jemaah Ansharut Daulah, a pro-Islamic State terror network, on a police station in Bandung, West Java, killed the attacker and a police officer as well as injured 11 people.
