CENTRAL SULAWESI: A former pro-Islamic State terrorist in Indonesia’s Central Sulawesi province is now living a normal life as an ordinary citizen. He is even running a fruit business, it has been reported.
Formerly a member of Mujahideen Indonesia Timur or Eastern Indonesia Mujahideen, a group better known as MIT, Muhrin @ Mu @ Abi Afnan was arrested by the police on Dec. 22, 2012 in Sindue District, Donggala Regency, Central Sulawesi.
He had hidden information about the whereabouts of MIT leader Santoso @ Abu Wardah, providing facilities in the form of space and other things to the group and possession of firearms.
Santoso pledged allegiance to the Islamic State in July 2014 and was killed on July 18, Â 2016 by the Indonesian Army after two years of hiding in the jungles near Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi.
Muhrin was sentenced to four years in prison for his involvement in MIT.
After being released from prison several years ago, Muhrin now sells fruits in Maranda village, Poso Pesisir Utara District, Poso Regency, together with his wife and children.
His fruits are sold daily to Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of the island of Borneo.
When met at his residence recently, Muhrin admitted that he regretted his actions and promised not to repeat them.
He even invited residents to work together to maintain security and public order in the Poso Regency.
"Moreover, the current situation we see is much different than before when there was still the MIT group. With that, let's protect it together, because if the situation is safe and conducive, all parties will feel safe and secure and development will take place," he was quoted as saying by news site Media Alkhairaat.
He also invited the public to support government programmes, assist security forces in preventing the development of radical or anti-government ideas through deradicalisation activities.
